The “Blue Note” is a POWERFUL musical note.  It is the most unpleasant, dissonant note there is, which is why it’s so AWESOME.  Because it creates so much tension, it makes resolution that much sweeter.  This note is the habanero pepper of music!!!  It goes by many names, and deserves a chapter of study all its own.  For our purposes here, we’re going to keep it simple and refer to it as the “Blue Note”, because when it is added to the Pentatonic Scale, it becomes the Blues Scale.

When played top to bottom, can you hear how the Blues Scale is FAR sassier than it’s more polite sibling, the humble Pentatonic Scale?  The gnarly dissonance of the “Blue Note” adds tons of flavor to your lines by throwing some spice in the middle of the safer, more tuneful notes of the rest of the Pentatonic Scale.  Think of it as a cool scar on a pretty face.  It adds character!  Experiment with it as a passing tone in your lines, and also use it sparingly as a destination note to grab the attention of the audience.  They will DEFINITELY take notice when you land on it.  Just remember to resolve it!
